In 2013, Shirley Ann Williams et al. performed a meta-analysis (an assessment of previous research) of studies of the social media website formerly known as Twitter, such as the 2011 paper by Brody and Diakopoulos titled “Cooooooooooooooollllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Using Word Lengthening to Detect Sentiment in Microblogs,” in order to identify research trends. Williams’s team found that while a significant number of papers focused on profiles of users, many focused on message content. Williams’s team also found that when researchers focused on message content, they were especially likely to use knowledge discovery methods (methods derived from statistical analysis and artificial intelligence that are aimed at handling enormous amounts of information), suggesting that
