In her work as a sociocultural anthropologist, Livia Barbosa studies food and sociability in contemporary Brazil-namely, how common Brazilian foods like tareco (a disk-shaped biscuit) and coxinha (a stuffed fried dough) as central mechanisms in building social relationships, values, and identities.
