Many places that gained their independence from Spain in the nineteenth century still bear the legacy of the Spanish Empire in their language, including Spanish-speaking Cuba, which left the empire in 1898. blank which ceased to be part of the Spanish Empire in 1648; Spanish is rarely spoken in the Netherlands in the twenty-first century.
