When the first railroads were built in Australia in the a variety of track sizes (gauges) were used across the continent, resulting in what historians call the "railway gauge muddle." The Victorian Goldfields Railway line in Victoria used broad tracks. _blank the Hotham Valley Railway line in Western Australia used narrow gauge tracks.
