As Iestyn Barr and his team of researchers discovered when establishing the glacial timeline of Antarctica, the Transantarctic Mountains—a 3,500-km mountain range spanning the continent—are home to glaciers of at least 60 million years in age. ______ the researchers concluded, Antarctica had glaciers long before the formation of its continent-wide ice sheet 34 million years ago.
