The decades since the Second World War have seen a range of outcomes for the independence movements of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. Many of the regions islands and groups of islands have become independent nations. the Northern Mariana Islands, a commonwealth in Micronesia consisting of fifteen islands, are part of the US, and the Society Islands, a group of islands in Polynesia including Tahiti and Bora Bora, are part of the territory of French Polynesia.
