In the book A Theory of Harmony (1985), Swiss musicologist Ernst Levy argued that every chord has an opposite that can be substituted for it. For example, a pianist could replace the bvii6 chord for the II7 chord while _____ chord is a given chord's opposite can be determined using a music visualization tool called the circle of fifths.
