A loose confederation of cities from eleven modern-day countries, the Hanseatic League was a powerful mercantile alliance that dominated northern European trade between the 13th and 17th centuries. Hanseatic League member ______blank was serendipitously located on the Rhine River in Germany, giving Cologne’s merchants access to key maritime trade routes.
