Was the Greek mythological figure Dionysus, god of wine and the theater, based on a real person? That was the question posed by the writer Euhemerus (fourth century BCE). Euhemerus claimed that Dionysus and the other Greek deities were based on real–life heroes or leaders, tales of whose exploits, told and retold over time, ____ myths–a position later known as euhemerism.
