Kawai Gyokudō's 1895 piece Cormorant Fishing is an important work of Nihonga, or traditional Japanese painting. To produce the piece, Kawai used a centuries-old Japanese approach, applying color pigments to a silk surface. By contrast, Asai Chū _____ European methods, using oil on canvas to produce Western-style paintings.
