Included in Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem, a 2019 group exhibition at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, California, was the work of artist Lorna Simpson, who is best known for her multimedia artworks that juxtapose images of African American women with text fragments. Her work challenges conventional notions of race, gender, history, and she is credited with expanding the horizons of conceptual photographic art.
