For many decades, US movie studios produced a slow trickle of franchise movies-sequels, spin-offs, and other movies featuring familiar stories and characters. But the flow seems to have increased significantly since the early 2010s, with franchise films like Minions and Jurassic World Dominion flooding movie screens. Instead of focusing on original stories, movie studios keep making franchise entries, reusing the same plots and characters. This excessive reliance on franchises has limited filmmakers' opportunities to bring fresh ideas to movie screens.
