The Austronesian language family comprises some 1,200 languages—including the ______ Gilbertese and Tongan, which are spoken by 120,000 and 108,000 speakers, respectively—and accounts for one-fifth of the world's languages, making it of keen interest to linguists like Marian Klamer.
