At past Olympics, in contrast to demonstration sports with international appeal, regionally popular sports were exhibited as onetime showcases. while the internationally popular sport of handball became a medal event after demonstration, kaatsen, a handball sport popular in the Netherlands, only appeared at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
