With their distinctive cone shapes and steeply sloping sides, the volcanoes Mount Taranaki (New Zealand) and Mount Shishaldin (Alaska) may look similar from afar. volcanologists classify them differently based on how they formed: Taranaki is a stratovolcano, while Shishaldin is a cinder cone volcano.
