Many works of the Greek mathematician Archimedes (3rd century BCE), including his text on optics, Catoptrica, have been lost to time. Antiquarians to read one of Archimedes's extant works-not one known only through references to it by other authors, that is might instead procure a copy of his Psammites, a treatise on mathematics and astronomy.
