In premodern Europe, one could sail from the east coast of England to the Netherlands or France faster than one could travel by land to England's capital, London. In that era, historian Michael Pye argues in his 2015 book The Edge of the World: A Cultural History of the North Sea and the Transformation of Europe, the North Sea did more to link the various peoples, cultures, and economies on ______ shores than to divide them.
