During many historic New York City parades, including the 1924 ticker-tape parade for US Olympic champions, the ribbonlike swirls descending on the scene were paper spools from "tickers," telegraph machines that were used to transmit stock prices. the tickers had long since been retired by the time of the parade for the New York Rangers in 1994. Then, shredded standard paper enriched the celebration.
