Many of late nineteenth-century artist James McNeill Whistler's oil paintings and lithographs depict the streets of European cities. While his contemporaries' approaches to these subjects were often sentimental, Whistler's eye seemed ______. In this way, he anticipated the early twentieth-century photographs of Walker Evans, which create the illusion of being objective documentations of life.
