Though research indicating that plants may preferentially absorb zinc and other essential elements (i.e., those necessary for plant growth) from soil over nonessential ones seems to suggest that zinc-contaminated soil may be especially to decontamination by plants, Stephan Pauleit and team found that plants tended to accumulate the nonessential element cadmium at higher rates than zinc; the presence of cadmium in such soils should thus be assessed before pursuing plant-based zinc decontamination.
