Based on writing samples collected from participants in previous studies that indicated a link between aging and increased use of present tense verbs (e.g., “goes”), among other linguistic shifts, two researchers investigated whether the writing of acclaimed authors similarly evolves over time. Using a computer algorithm, the researchers analyzed the works of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, author of Renascence and Other Poems (1917), and nine other English-language authors whose literary output spanned multiple decades.
