During the 1952 New York ticker-tape parade for US Olympic champions, the ribbonlike swirls descending on the scene were paper spools from "tickers," telegraph machines used to transmit stock prices. Of course, the original ticker tape had long since been retired by the 1986 parade for the New York Mets. shredded standard paper enriched the celebration.
