In the early 1900s, sculptor and collector Gertrude Whitney was one of the foremost champions of avant-garde art, helping many US avant-garde artists gain publicity and exposure. ____ Whitney offered to donate more than 500 avant-garde works to be displayed at a leading New York museum, but the museum said no—so she opened her own, the Whitney Museum of American Art.
