Research such as the 2014 study of mammals by Graeme Shannon and colleagues has shown that noise from human activity, like traffic on a busy highway, has significant effects on animals, and many governments require studies of the potential noise effects on wildlife before approving highway construction projects. A report on one such study proposed many more actions to mitigate the effects on fish in the area than it did to mitigate the effects on mammals in the area.
