To British musician Jacob Collier, substituting the iii7 chord for the bV16 chord-its opposite in pitch and tone-adds expression to improvisation without creating dissonance. This conceptualization of harmonic opposites did not originate with _____ in 1985, the idea was first articulated in Swiss musicologist Ernst Levy's posthumously published book A Theory of Harmony.
