Al-Andalus, the historical region of the Iberian Peninsula that includes most of modern-day Spain, was ruled by various Arabic-speaking Muslim states between the eighth and fifteenth centuries. ________ many Arabic words, such as "alacrán"—meaning "scorpion"—made their way into the Spanish language.
