Data from a 1986 spacecraft flyby revealed that, unlike those of other planets in our solar system, Uranus’s protective magnetic field appeared to be devoid of plasma. Scientists now believe, however, that the spacecraft’s flyby corresponded by chance with a rare increase in solar activity. Because the flyby occurred during an event, the data it provided about Uranus were likely anomalous.
