Magical realism, a style that weaves fantasy into realistic narratives, coalesced in Latin America in the 1960s. It is associated with Gabriel García Márquez, whose Big Mama’s Funeral is a key text. The style was embraced by Mexican American writers, such as Rudolfo Anaya, whose Bless Me, Ultima draws on Mexican folktales as a source of fantasy. Yet Tortuga, also by Anaya, features no fantastical plot events. And despite his popular reputation, García Márquez himself wrote several works of strict realism, including Love in the Time of Cholera.
