- In 1488, Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias led the first European expedition to sail around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa.
- Dias and his crew were the first Europeans to see the Indian Ocean.
- Dias called the Cape of Good Hope the Cape of Storms, but King John Il of Portugal renamed it because it was hoped that Dias’s expedition would lead to a sea route to India.
- This route to India was finally achieved by Vasco da Gama in 1498.
- Da Gama led a fleet of four ships that sailed from Portugal to India.
