The Sultanate of Brunei, a Malay sea power based on the northern coast of Borneo that reached its height around 1600 CE, is considered a thalassocracy-a geopolitical entity whose hegemony resulted from control of the sea rather than of land. Historians classify thalassocracies as distinct from tellurocracies, or land-based powers. _______ the Ottoman Empire (1300s-1900s CE) is known for both land and sea supremacy.
