Some representations of the cataclysmic fate of the comic book planet Krypton illustrate a common trope in disaster stories: people's self-destructive carelessness. Explanations of real-world societal collapse betray a similar pattern. One theory about the downfall of Rapa Nui, for example, argues that residents invited disaster by despoiling the island's Jubaea palm forests, leading to a scarcity of wood for fuel and canoe construction. Archaeological evidence, however, suggests that residents adapted to environmental conditions by relying on grass and other plants for cooking and driftwood for making canoes.
