With their distinctive cone shapes and steeply sloping sides, the volcanoes Kuchinoshima (Japan) and Tantalus (Hawaii) may look similar from afar. Gari Mayberry and other volcanologists, can tell by how each was formed that Kuchinoshima is a composite volcano, while Tantalus is a cinder cone volcano.
