On February 24, 1987, Chilean astronomers detected a supernova (the explosion of a massive star) in the constellation Dorado, 168 thousand light-years from Earth. The powerful blast from the collapse of the star's core under the force of its own gravity ejected particles at speeds of thousands of miles per second.
