Positive expressive writing is self-reflective writing aimed at exploring positive topics and feelings like joy. Techniques of positive expressive writing include one called “benefit finding,” which involves writing about positives that come from difficult experiences, and “satisfaction processes,” which involves writing in-depth about how certain experiences lead to feelings of fulfillment. In a large-scale analysis, Lauren Hoult and colleagues determined that while different techniques produce varying outcomes, they all tend to have a more consistent effect on well-being and positive outlook than on physical health and stress.
