Soil polluted with chromium (a heavy metal) is harmful to many plants and animals, but the plant species Ludwigia prostrata, or creeping water primrose, can thrive in such conditions. ________ as a metal hyperaccumulator, Ludwigia prostrata absorbs a large amount of chromium and sequesters it in its roots and shoots, thereby reducing concentrations of this harmful substance in the soil.
