By 3500 BCE, the Botai, a Eurasian steppe people, were engaged in the earliest known horse husbandry practices, such as corralling. Over the next several centuries, however, there is no evidence of Botai horses outside the relatively small Botai homeland—e.g., the CPONT horse strand, dominant in what is now Russia no later than 3089 BCE, shows no Botai interaction—and modern domestic horses (strand DOM2) emerged from a non-Botai lineage by around 2200 BCE. The introduction of selective breeding for long-distance transport capabilities enabled DOM2 to spread quickly, becoming dominant in what is now Turkey by 2125 BCE and throughout Eurasia by the late 2nd millennium BCE. Which choice most logically completes the text?
A
the Botai may have maintained horses for purposes other than long-distance travel, and their husbandry likely did not result in Botai horses having clear advantages over other horse strains.
B
the lack of interaction between Botai horses and CPONT horses is likely attributable to Botai horses being outcompeted by DOM2 horses due to the latter’s superior long-distance travel capabilities.
C
while the Botai’s husbandry likely did not extend to the selective breeding of horses to spread particular traits, the Botai do appear to have used horses as a means of long-distance transportation.
D
although Botai horses may not have spread to other regions, the horse husbandry practices of the Botai people likely did, though not until some point between 3089 BCE and 2200 BCE.
