As a defense mechanism, the monarch butterfly ________ toxic compounds from milkweed plants. On ingesting a piece of milkweed, the monarch selectively absorbs toxic cardenolides from the plant in its gut and stores them in the tissues throughout its body, rendering the butterfly unpalatable to predators.
