Known as an "empire on which the sun never sets," the Spanish Empire once controlled portions of five continents. Its legacy can still be seen, and heard, in the Spanish-speaking nation of Cuba, which gained its independence from Spain in the nineteenth century. ____ a former colony's tie to the Spanish Empire is so tenuous that Spanish is seldom spoken there; an example is Sardinia, which ceased to be part of the empire in 1720.
