In a given rock formation, Tortonian rock from 11.6 million years ago might directly abut Capitanian rock from 264.3 million years ago. But how could this happen? Time did not actually stand still during the intervening 252.7 million years; ________ this geologic unconformity likely resulted from natural processes removing sedimentary material from the stratigraphic record.
