In a 2018 article about films depicting the experiences of Black Americans, critics for the New York Times praise Carl Franklin's 1995 film Devil in a Blue Dress as "picture perfect" and Cheryl Dunye's 1996 film The Watermelon Woman as "heartbreaking and inspiring." Fans of the two films hope that such will attract new audiences to these works.
