The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is an organization of journalists, students, and media professionals. It was founded on December 12, 1975, in Washington, DC, by a group of 44 journalists who sought to advocate on behalf of Black media workers and promote diversity in newsrooms. While the association has since expanded significantly—establishing regional chapters in cities such as Philadelphia and Detroit, and hosting annual conventions in locations like San Diego—its historic founding meeting took place in the nation’s capital.
