Sandy River in Oregon hosts one of a growing number of restoration projects that target the hyporheic zone (HZ), a subsurface region where groundwater and surface water mix, creating a richly biodiverse habitat. While rebuilding an HZ’s physical structure (e.g., with gravel) might be feasible, is it possible to restore its biological community? To explore this question, scientists seeded restored HZs in Oregon’s Johnson Creek with stoneflies and other locally extirpated species. Although the restored areas were colonized quickly, it was mostly by species from the unrestored sections of the creek rather than by the reintroduced species.
