Many works of the Roman historian Sallust (1st century BCE), including his history of the Roman Republic, Histories, have been lost to time. Antiquarians to read one of Sallust's extant works—not one known only through references to it by other authors, that is—might instead procure a copy of his Bellum catalinae, a chronicle of a coup attempt.
