In the early 1920s, researchers at the US Geological Survey determined the geographic center of Maine using a simple method. First, they attached a string to the middle point of a cardboard cutout of the state and suspended it in the air. blank they adjusted the suspension point until the cutout hung perfectly flat. Ultimately, this point was determined to be the center.
