In a 2018 article celebrating films depicting the Black experience, critics for the New York Times Ossie Davis's 1970 film Cotton Comes to Harlem and Cheryl Dunye's 1996 film The Watermelon Woman, praising the former as "especially pointed" and the latter as "heartbreaking and inspiring."
