In a 2022 analysis of small sovereign countries, Archie Simpson categorized forty-one as microstates based, in part, on the criterion of having a population under one million-for instance, Suriname, with its population approximately 630,000. ______ political scholar Sarina Theys suggests an intersubjective approach to classification by which a small country's status is self-defined rather than relying on externally imposed or quantitative standards.
