Released in 1996, the AMD K5 microchip contained a single CPU, or core, to execute commands. Since then, the average processing power of microchips has increased so drastically-cores now number in the dozens, hundreds, or even the once-revolutionary dual-core technology that replaced the single-core chip can be found in everyday items like toasters and toothbrushes.
