Pakistan’s Indus River is one of the rare places on Earth where one can witness a massive wall of water travel against the normal direction of a river’s current. This wave, the Indus River Bore, is a spectacular example of a tidal bore. Bores tend to form on rivers that empty into broad, shallow bodies of water with exceptionally high tides. The Indus River Bore arises when the highest tides of the Indus River Delta push water into the Indus River. The incoming tide builds in height as it moves into the narrow mouth of the river, forming a powerful wave that travels upstream for great distances.
