Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey (1818) is considered a satire of another novel popular at the time: Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), which Austen's heroine, Catherine Morland, is depicted reading. However, the similarity of the ______ experiences --- the predicaments of both Catherine and Radcliffe's Emily St. Aubert result from men's greed --- suggests that underlying the satire is a social critique.
