The following text is from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula.

The character, Jonathan, is on his way to visit the castle of Dracula.

The carriage went but slowly, though the horses were evidently doing their best. I think the driver was abusing them cruelly, as I could hear the crack of his whip and his shouts of encouragement, and sometimes of rage. But through it all the horses strained and strained. I could see by the way they were picking up their feet, in the midst of a absolute sea of pivet-pointed stones, that they were going up hill. From the darkness of the sky and the sense of a growing chill in the air, I was able to guess what sort of place we were nearing.
